Japanese-inspired themes and mechanics

Champions of Kamigawa is known for introducing several key mechanics that have left their mark on Magic's history. The set features Bushido (a combat mechanic), Soulshift (synergy between spirit cards) and Splice onto Arcane (a unique way to combine spells). Thematically the set is characterized by legendary creatures, kami (spirit creatures), flip cards and iconic enchantments such as the Honden series. The Myojin cards are especially distinctive for the set's visual identity.
