Sword & Shield

What is Pokémon Sword & Shield?

Pokémon Sword & Shield is one of the most significant eras in Pokémon TCG history. The era spans from the first Sword & Shield base set in February 2020 to Crown Zenith in January 2023, covering both main sets and a number of popular special sets. For collectors and players alike, Sword & Shield marks a shift to modern chase culture with the introduction of Pokémon V, VMAX and an abundance of Alternate Art and Secret Rare cards. Here is an overview of what makes the Sword & Shield series unique, and how to choose the right product for your collection or play.

Different product formats in the Sword & Shield series

The Sword & Shield era offers a wide range of product formats, each catering to different needs. The most classic formats are Sword & Shield booster boxes, which contain a full display of booster packs and are popular with both collectors and players who want to open many packs at once. If you prefer single packs, Sword & Shield booster packs are the obvious choice — here you can chase specific chase cards without investing in a whole box.

Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) are another key format. A Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Box typically contains eight to ten booster packs, sleeves, dice and other accessories, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced players who want a complete experience. Special sets such as Champion’s Path, Shining Fates, Celebrations, Pokémon GO and Crown Zenith are often released only as ETBs and other exclusive products, not as traditional booster boxes.

Tins and Ultra-Premium Collections (UPCs) offer even more options, especially for collectors who want exclusive promos or special storage solutions. Finally there are also acrylic cases and sleeves to protect your most valuable Sword & Shield cards and sealed products.

How to choose the right Sword & Shield product

Choosing the right Pokémon Sword & Shield product depends on whether you collect, play, or want to expand your collection with special cards. Booster packs and booster boxes are ideal if you want to open many packs and chase the big chase cards — especially in sets like Evolving Skies, where cards such as Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art (“Moonbreon”) and Rayquaza VMAX Alternate Art are among the most sought-after.

Elite Trainer Boxes are perfect if you want a balanced experience with both booster packs and accessories. They are also often the only way to get special sets, where you can find unique promos and a strong collector focus. Tins and Ultra-Premium Collections offer exclusive cards and extra content, while accessories like acrylic cases ensure your sealed products stay in top condition.

Typical uses and benefits of the different formats:

Booster packs: Flexible opening and chasing specific cards.

Booster boxes: Greater chance to pull more high-rarity cards and build a solid set.

Elite Trainer Boxes: Complete solution with accessories and access to special sets.

Tins and UPCs: Exclusive promos and collector-friendly storage.

Accessories: Protection and display for your most important cards and sealed products.

Why Sword & Shield is popular among collectors and players

The Sword & Shield era has left its mark on both collectors and players through the introduction of Pokémon V, VMAX and a range of new rarity types such as Alternate Art, Full Art and Secret Rare. Especially the late sets in the era, such as Evolving Skies, Brilliant Stars, Lost Origin, Silver Tempest and Crown Zenith, have achieved cult status because of their iconic chase cards and strong set identity.

For collectors, Sword & Shield is synonymous with modern Pokémon TCG, where the hunt for the rarest cards — especially Alt Arts and Secret Rares — has become a central part of the hobby. Players have also gained access to new mechanics and strategies that have shaped the tournament scene. Whether you prefer sealed products, are chasing the biggest hits, or just want a piece of Pokémon history, the Sword & Shield era offers something for every enthusiast.
