Differences between booster types and product formats

One of the biggest changes in Magic The Gathering 2020-24 is the variety of product formats, each offering unique experiences for both players and collectors. To hit exactly what you’re after, it’s important to know the differences between the most popular formats:

Draft Booster Displays: Contains 36 packs of 15 cards, designed for the Limited format (draft and sealed). You get a classic mix of commons, uncommons and one rare per pack — perfect for tournament play and draft nights.

Set Booster Displays: Typically 30 packs of 12 cards, where each pack includes art cards, showcase frames and a chance for more rares. Set Boosters are ideal for those who love opening packs for the thrill and hunting for special variants.

Collector Booster Displays: The premium product with 12–15 packs filled with foil treatments, borderless arts, serialized cards and exclusive alt-art versions. Collector Boosters are for collectors who want the finest and rarest pieces from each set.

Prerelease Packs: Tournament-tailored kits with six half-decks and a promo-stamped rare, ready for sealed events and perfect for experiencing a new set from the start.

The different formats let you choose the exact Magic experience that fits your needs — whether you play, collect, or simply enjoy opening packs with the potential for unique finds.

Unique characteristics of MTG sets from 2020-24

MTG sets from 2020–2024 are defined by innovation and crossover collaborations that significantly expanded the universe. With the introduction of Universes Beyond, Magic opened its doors to iconic franchises like Lord of the Rings and Assassin’s Creed. These sets offer everything from double-faced cards (e.g., modal DFC in LOTR) to surge foils and serialized cards, where each copy has a unique number — a true mecca for collectors.

Remastered sets like Time Spiral Remastered have given classic cards new life, while Modern Horizons II and III introduced power cards and fetch lands that have influenced both collections and tournament play. Special features such as showcase frames, extended-art lands and a wealth of foil variants make Magic cards from 2020–24 stand out visually and for collectors.

The period is also marked by a notable increase in release frequency, resulting in a wide variety of themes and mechanics — from D&D background foils to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty’s alt-art cards. Especially the Foundations set from 2024 introduced an “evergreen” Standard format that won’t rotate until 2029, creating stability for both players and collectors.

How to choose the right Magic product from 2020-24

Choosing the right MTG product depends on whether you are primarily a collector, a player, or both. Draft Boosters are the obvious choice if you love the Limited format and want to build decks from scratch. Set Boosters are for those hunting exciting variants and more rares per pack, while Collector Boosters cater to collectors seeking the most exclusive and rare cards — including serialized and alt-art versions.

If you’re after the tournament experience and want a quick overview of a new set, Prerelease Packs are a great option. Remember that Universes Beyond sets often include unique mechanics and collaborations not found in core expansions. Also consider whether you want to focus on remastered sets for reprints of classics or go after the latest innovations.
